CORINNA HOWELL

Although normally I am a portrait painter, I have recently been taken by the landscape and structures of Battery Point. Having spent the last six months strolling daily through the area on my travels to work, I have had plenty of opportunity to appreciate the iconic cottages and layout of the suburb along with its history. Through stormy winter days and tranquil spring evenings, I have always felt a sense of whimsy when journeying through Battery Point. These works are the beginning to my venture into landscape painting.

Portraiture has always taken my interest as I simply have an obsession for familiarizing myself with the human face and body - though in the last few years of my practice, I have come to concern myself with the identities and relationships we all hold with each other. I find that because of this, it seems appropriate that in my first venture into landscape painting I have taken an interest to the structures and homes we build for ourselves. I am most inspired by buildings that have attention to small detail and unusual combinations of colour and pattern - I find a lot of this in Battery Point
