Whilst walking in Mount Field I stumbled upon a graveyard of trees. At this point, I had taken so many pictures that my battery had gone flat - but this was an experience and image that required no photo. It was at once both beautiful and horrifying and not surprising that it should find its way from my mind onto the canvas.

An evocative work of Cradle Mountain by Phillip McKay - large enough to walk into and inspect the detail and get caught up in the textured landscape and turbulent sky. This painting brings together the best elements of the artist’s work, utilising a pallete knife and impasto approach to render the foreground, with the sky being articulated through sweeping gestural brushstrokes. You must see this work in the flesh - its an absolute beauty!
