<image:caption>The works I have exhibited in 'Ground Bearing' explore the expanded condition of contemporary place based drawing and printmaking. The selection of works are from a recent project titled 'Fourfoot Rd.' which explores the bushfire affected environment on the outskirts of Geeveston, Tasmania. These works were drawn with an angle grinder, on location in the bush, on large aluminium sheets. The bush on the outskirts of Geeveston, is an accumulative and transitory dumping ground - machinery and engine tubes spill from the ground resembling bodies and organs, while simultaneously mimicking the fallen trees. Tracing the impacts of civilisation in the local environment, my work explores the collision between the forgotten place, the constructed landscape, and the narratives that emerge when one is framed within the other. When the landscape is damaged, dug up, and stripped away, we are not simply met with nature, we are again met with civilisation, and a reminder of our own transience.</image:caption>

<image:caption>These paintings are based on the optical and physical navigational challenges involved in ascending the steep Lost World Track high on the flank of kunanyi. This unformed track is indistinct from the fallen jumble of car-sized dolerite boulders that it steeply ascends. Occasional boulders have been hand-painted with circular red and yellow track-markers to help guide the way. However, these markers are beginning to fade and are increasingly hard to spot as they blend in visually with the circular lichen that also colonise the boulders. As one ascends this steep track, scrambling with hands and feet over rough dolerite, avoiding the deep-dark-clefts between the rocks, one gets a sense of the mark of humans fading into the depth of an ancient, slow geology. These dolerite boulders having been formed during the Jurassic Period 170 million years ago.</image:caption>

<image:caption>For McKay, the landscape has always been a place of quiet reverence and connection. A place to mirror and project onto - a place to pour emotions and settle the mind. Though clearly infused with a Tasmanian sensibility, his landscape artworks remain non-representational in a topographical sense. Rather, they emerge from the canvas through the act of painting, remembering and feeling – pastiches of place, mood and memory. McKay’s concern for many years now, has been the impacts of climate change. Bushfire, scorched earth and dried up river banks are reoccurring motifs through many of his works. In 2005 he won the MONA Scholarship and produced 44 artworks over the year which were shown in his “Silent and Sorry” exhibition. This was McKay’s attempt to apologise, reconcile and acknowledge guilt for the whitefella’s murder, oppression, theft and slavery of this land’s first peoples. McKay utilises tools and techniques that best mimic the seemingly random nature of the environment. Palette knives, rags, brushes and fingers are employed as random shapes emerge and are included or rejected as the painting evolves. Sometimes the process can take years before the painting is satisfactorily resolved. As McKay points out. “Perhaps my paintings can never be finished, perhaps that is an impossibility. As time passes, so too do my sensibilities change. What appears to be finished today, becomes a work in progress tomorrow.” McKay graduated from UTAS School of Art in 1999 and has also spent many years teaching art to people in prison, other people with mental health issues and young people. He is currently the gallerist at the Hobart Art Gallery and artist in residence at the Hotel Grand Chancellor where he also runs a small art school.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Although normally I am a portrait painter, I have recently been taken by the landscape and structures of Battery Point. Having spent the last six months strolling daily through the area on my travels to work, I have had plenty of opportunity to appreciate the iconic cottages and layout of the suburb along with its history. Through stormy winter days and tranquil spring evenings, I have always felt a sense of whimsy when journeying through Battery Point. These works are the beginning to my venture into landscape painting. Portraiture has always taken my interest as I simply have an obsession for familiarizing myself with the human face and body - though in the last few years of my practice, I have come to concern myself with the identities and relationships we all hold with each other. I find that because of this, it seems appropriate that in my first venture into landscape painting I have taken an interest to the structures and homes we build for ourselves. I am most inspired by buildings that have attention to small detail and unusual combinations of colour and pattern - I find a lot of this in Battery Point</image:caption>

<image:caption>Marks and lines weave layers around one another, interacting with, and obscuring those beneath them. Organic and inorganic shapes take form. Fiercely passionate about the expressive nature allowed by drawing, my works are informed by a long process of exploring Tasmanian places through sketching. Multitudes of drawings are later used as reference material, offering an extension to my memory of place. Final works aim to create a likeness beyond the visual; an essence of place, or a feeling. Focussing on local landscape and history, my aim is to understand where things go when they are erased, through works that showcase humanity’s intricate relationship with the earth and the layered narratives our marks leave behind.</image:caption>
